Tips for Unwinding and Relaxing for Sleep

Between our massage visits, and your hectic home or work life, you may still be looking for some simple ways to get better, more restful sleep. When you combine massage therapy with some easy nighttime habits, you’ll be sleeping like a baby in no time. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Set a regular bedtime. This means every day of the week, including weekends, you should be following the same routine each time. Our internal clocks depend on us to keep them regulated, and when we introduce erratic sleep behavior, our clocks get confused.
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine. Pick a time in the evening when you set your phone down, turn the TV off, and spend some time unwinding and decompressing. Dim the lights, enjoy a warm bath or shower, read a book, or practice meditation. Eliminating as much outside stimulation as possible is essential to relaxation.
  • Avoid late afternoon naps. This may seem like a given but napping in the afternoon can really affect our ability to sleep later. It doesn’t mean you are never allowed to take a nap but be conscious of when you cave in and hit the hay.
  • Stay away from alcohol, nicotine, heavy meals, and caffeine. Eating a large meal late in the evening, drinking and smoking, or pounding down the coffees will undoubtedly cause a major disruption in your sleep. If you notice indigestion at night or when you lay down, you should avoid eating or drinking anything besides water in the evening.
